What to Expect: The Atmosphere
-
High Energy & Hectic: Competitions are high-energy, crowded, and loud. There will be many studios in one venue.
-
Long Days: Be prepared for long hours, with significant downtime between performances.
-
Uncertain Schedule: Events may run ahead of or behind schedule. It is crucial to be ready up to 2 hours early.
-
Shared Dressing Rooms: You will likely share a large, open dressing space with other dancers. It is important to be respectful of space.
-
Adjudication & Awards: Judges score on technique, stage presence, and choreography. All dancers usually participate in a trophy/prize ceremony.
Preparation Checklist (Before the Day)
-
Label Everything: Costume bags, shoes, hair accessories, and water bottles should be labeled with the dancer's name.
-
Assemble an Emergency Kit: Pack safety pins (various sizes), a mini sewing kit, scissors, hot glue/superglue, duct tape, tide-to-go stick, and hair spray.
-
Checklist Check: Use a checklist for costumes, shoes (including extra pairs), tights (multiple pairs), and accessories for each routine.
-
Practice in Costume: Rehearse the full routine in the costume to identify any issues with hairpieces or clothing fit.
3. Arrival and Setup
-
Arrive Early: Arrive at least 2 hours before your scheduled time for check-in, hair/makeup, and warm-ups.
-
Find Your Space: Locate your team’s dressing area and set up your costumes, shoes, and accessories in the order you will need them.
-
Check in Backstage: Dancers are generally required to check in with the stage manager 5-10 routines before their performance. So please have dancers to us well before then.
-
Assigned Spaces: Dressing rooms are designated by the studio, often with multiple studios sharing large, open spaces like hotel ballrooms.
-
Check-in: Upon arrival at the venue, look for posted information or ask staff to find your studio's designated dressing area.
-
Venue Control: In some scenarios, dressing rooms are limited in capacity to maintain safety, with assignments sent out before the event.
-
Warm-Up: Use the dressing room or designated area to stretch and warm up. Bring headphones for listening to music while preparing.
4. During the Competition
-
Hair & Makeup: These are usually done in the dressing room. Use strong-hold hairspray and consider going a bit darker with makeup, as stage lights wash out features.
-
Costume Mishaps: If a costume rips or a shoe falls off, keep dancing. Most mistakes are not noticed by the audience, so keep smiling.
-
Music Issues: If the music stops, continue to dance with the rhythm in your head.
-
Support & Etiquette: Do not enter or exit the auditorium while a number is on stage. Be supportive of all dancers.
5. Nutrition and Well-being
-
Hydration: Bring a reusable water bottle and ensure the dancer stays hydrated.
-
Non-Messy Snacks: Pack healthy, non-greasy, and non-staining snacks (e.g., fruit, pretzels, granola bars, yogurt-covered pretzels). Bring a button-up top or a zip-up hoodie that doesn't go over the head to cover costumes.
-
Quiet Activities: Bring books, tablets, or games to keep the dancer occupied during long downtimes.
6. Tips for Parents
-
Don't Hover: After drop-off for warm-ups, let the dancers bond with their team.
-
Embrace the Journey: The main goal of the first competition is to learn, improve, and have fun. Don't put immense pressure on winning.
-
Bring Cash: Many venues charge for parking, entry, or have vendor booths.
-
Bring a Portable Charger: Outlets are rare in crowded dressing rooms.
